Why “No Pain, No Gain” Is One of Fitness’s Biggest Myths

“No Pain, No Gain”, a phrase we have all heard at some point in our lives, regardless of what it pertains to. For many people in our community, it has become the benchmark of a good workout. If you are not drenched in sweat, sore the next day, or struggling to walk down the stairs, did you actually even train hard enough?
The reality is, effective training is not measured by how exhausted you feel when you leave the gym. It is measured by whether you are making progress over time. So the question is, are you in pain, or are you in gain?
The Problem with Chasing Exhaustion

Are you progressing or are you reaching burnout?
Many people mistake fatigue for progress. While challenging yourself is important, constantly pushing to your limit can lead to poor recovery, inconsistent training, and eventually burnout.
The best training programmes do not ask you to give 110% every single session. They ask you to show up consistently.
Progress Beats Punishment

Purposeful training creates sustainable progress.
Every workout should have a purpose. Every workout plan should have proper structure.
Some days are designed to build strength. Others focus on conditioning, movement quality, or recovery. When every session has a clear objective, your body has the opportunity to adapt and improve rather than to simply survive.
That is why progressive programming is so important. Instead of repeating random workouts or chasing soreness, you are gradually building strength, endurance, and confidence over time.
Recovery Is Part of Training

Recovery is not a setback; it is part of the process.
One of the biggest mindset shifts in fitness is recognising that recovery is not a reward, it is part of the process. Sleep, nutrition, mobility, and rest all play a role in helping your body adapt to training.
Without recovery, even the hardest workouts become less effective. Training hard is important. Recovering well is what allows you to train hard again.
So remember, a day off to rest is not a wasted day.
Train for Life, Not Just for Today’s Workout

The goal is not to leave every session feeling completely spent. The goal is to keep showing up tomorrow, next week, and next year.
At RE30, our strength and conditioning programmes are built around progressive training rather than punishment. Every session has a purpose, every phase builds on the last, and every member is encouraged to train at an intensity that is appropriate for their experience and goals.
Because fitness should not leave you broken. It should leave you stronger, more capable, and better prepared for life outside the gym.
